BBCAmerica's Torchwood mini-seriesBBC America’s Torchwood – Children of Earth just opened a moral dilemma can of worms. The Diva Drew and I have been debating the BIG Questions the 5 part mini-series has presented.

Essentially, a group of aliens have come to earth and demanded 10% of the children of Earth or they’ll wipe out the entire population. And now the top officials are debating what to do.

First, they tried negotiating for a lower number. No soap. one fellow said the only fair way to choose which kids go is through a lottery. That got shot down real quick because no one at the table was willing to put their children at risk.

So now they’ve decided that THEIR children are off the table. And the same woman who demanded that none of their children should be given has suggested that they should simply go to the schools and pick the bottom performers from every school until they fill their quota.

Her justification was that these are the kids most likely to grow up and either end up in prison or on the dole. Another person suggested that their are countries that would love to get rid of a bunch of children that they can’t afford to feed, clothe and support.

And, of course, Captain Jack Harkness races in with his partner and tells the aliens that humans will fight to the death to defend their children so they might as well forget it and leave.

So the aliens seal the building and release a deadly toxin which kills everyone in the building except Jack who can’t be killed. So he has to watch his partner die. Suddenly all those brave words go right out the window.

Talk about yout moral dilemmas! Lots of fun stuff to play with. What do you do? What would you do? Can you see both sides of the issue? Do you just blindly take the easy way out? Do you sacrifice the children for the greater good or doom everyone to death? If you sacrifice the children, which ones?

Life always presents us with little moral dilemmas every day but this is the big stuff. We elect leaders to make these big decisions so we don’t have to.

What would you do?
